Mom's Black Sesame Cake

I love baking on weekends with my mother. She's an experienced baker who just can't seem to find the time to bake. Recently, because I've been such an enthusiastic (amateur) baker, she has decided to spare some time and bake with me!(Which makes me really happy because not only do I get to spend time with her, I get to learn her skills!!!)

This Sunday, she taught me how to make a delicious and super simple sesame cake. The first time she made this, I was taken aback at how amazingly light and springy the cake was, and how the sesame flavour was so strong yet not overpowering. This is a really simple sponge cake recipe with sesame powder, and it took us only about 30minutes to make this cake!

Ingredients:
150g sugar
1/4 tsp cream of tartar
5 eggs
5 tablespoons black sesame powder
150g self-raising flour
60g melted butter
Optional: Chocolate chips

Directions:
1. Beat eggs with sugar and cream of tartar on high speed till the mixture has at least doubled in size and thick.
2. Add in the black sesame powder and mix well.
3. Sift in the flour and fold gently till incorporated. Add in melted butter and fold gently.

4. Pour batter into a 1.5-inch deep baking pan(10x12in) lined with baking paper and sprinkle a handful of chocolate chips on the top.

5. Bake at 190ÂșC for 10-15 minutes or till a toothpick inserted comes out clean.

There you have it. A soft, springy and light cake filled with black sesame flavour. This is a favourite in my home and hopefully it would be in yours too! So simple to make, promising excellent results. :-)

Love,

    1. Cream of tartar is in powder form and it is sort of helps the cake rise and fluff up better:-) Used frequently in meringue recipes! That's great to hear:-)
